New: Online Community for young writers

Being a part of a community of writers is one of the most important aspects of our workshops programmes.

For all sorts of reasons, not everyone can attend our in-person writing classes so, starting this year, we are offering our Write On Saturdays Online.

Two young writers have their say about being in a community of writers:

“The Saturday classes are a fantastic and caring place to share your creations with peers and professionals. It is a safe haven for oddities and nonsense to grow up into actual pieces of literature. Or not. Either way, you are welcome.”

Charlotte, aged 17

"How I write has been tailored with all the best tips and tricks. I got advice from the tutors, who are always insightful and ready to encourage any fledgling piece, but quite a bit came from my peers. Discussing ideas and sharing inspiration with the people I meet here has helped me craft a few of my favourite pieces. The Write On classes shone a light on how the creative process can be improved by collaboration. This isn’t to say I don’t enjoy typing away by myself into the small hours of the night; I still love that. I now understand the importance of having a shared space..."

Derrin, aged 18

How will our new Write On Saturdays Online class work?

While our in-person classes work away in their own spaces at Ara in Ōtautahi Christchurch, you will Zoom in to your own dedicated classroom space with your own dedicated tutor.

It will be just the same as our in-person classes — only virtual. We've all had a lot of practice with this format over the past couple of years, right?

Your tutor will set some exercises, and you'll still get chances to work collaboratively and be able to share your individual writing either with the whole group or 1:1 with your tutor.

The class will run from 10:00 to 12:00 on Saturday mornings ( see the term dates here) Each session you will get a mix of warm up exercises, discussion, feedback and dedicated writing time. You can share your writing with your tutor on googledocs to allow for prompt feedback.

To start with, we are offering this opportunity to those aged 12 and up. Classes will be limited to 10 students so you will get plenty of opportunities to interact.

A bonus is that your tutor will be based at Ara which means that if we have special guests/ announcements etc then you will be a virtual part of that. We'll also create opportunities for you to connect with the in-person classes and widen your community.

We are thrilled to be able to make this opportunity available to young writers across Āotearoa New Zealand.
