Director Role Vacancy (Part-time)
Hours: 20 hours per week, flexible, but must include 3 hours on Saturday morning @ Ara Campus during the school term.
Location: Christchurch/Canterbury

We are a not-for-profit organisation based in Christchurch, New Zealand, offering tuition and mentorship to young writers aged 6 to 19. We have built a writing community that supports the hauora/wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi, gives them agency through writing and amplifies their voices through publication. We publish Write On Magazine and more young voices online on Write On Speak Out. Our hauora and inclusivity framework underpins our mahi.
We are seeking a leader who can balance creative vision with operational know-how.
Our director needs to manage a varied workload within a part-time (20 hrs/week) role, be adaptable and able to prioritise.
The director will have a passion for working with young people and promoting their writing. Youth work/ tutoring experience and engagement with the writing community are high priorities for the role.
Strong communication skills, oral and written, are essential, with a personal understanding of writing processes and challenges. Yes, we want you to be a writer too.
We seek someone who will work collaboratively with the executive committee, employees, our young people and their whanau, and build and maintain partnerships in the community.
Key Responsibilities: Leadership

Lead the development and delivery of Write On’s strategic plan, in partnership with the Executive Committee.

Ensure Write On’s mission, vision and values guide all activities.

Ensure compliance with employment, incorporated society and charity law, child health & safety and other regulatory requirements.

Recruit and manage staff and volunteers, providing support, supervision and development.

Foster an inclusive, positive organisational culture.

Regularly attend Write On Saturday classes at Ara Campus in Christchurch

Facilitate the publication of young writers’ work, providing support to the editors and design teams.
Key Responsibilities: Operational Management and Administration

Oversee budgeting, financial planning and reporting, including fundraising oversight, working with the Treasurer

Oversee day-to-day operations, systems and processes

Are you excited by the idea of working with young people who love writing?
For over thirty-three years, Write On School for Young Writers has inspired young people to explore and articulate their ideas and imaginations through creative writing. We have built a safe and supportive writing community for keen writers aged between 6 and 18. One of the most powerful tools in our kete is an approach that recognises the multiple opportunities young people have to clarify their ideas through redrafting and shaping their words with guidance from expert writing mentors.
Some of our tutors have grown up with Write On. Our other tutors all wish they had!
We employ and train emerging, experienced, published and award-winning writers to mentor and guide young writers. We are undergoing growth and demand, so we are seeking to build our diverse tutor pool for all of our programmes on a casual or part-time basis.
We run classes on Saturday mornings from 10-12 based at Ara City Campus. We also run workshops during the school week and holiday times across Waitaha Canterbury and online. We publish online and in print.
