This year, as part of our Fresh Voices project, we were able to facilitate writing workshops at two Ōtautahi Christchurch secondary schools, where our tutors worked with young people in Years 9-13.

"said" is a powerful tool in your writing toolbox. Why? Because readers barely notice it. When you start swapping in fancy synonyms for the sake of variety, you risk distracting your reader.

Syntax isn’t about being perfect — lots of writers break the rules for effect — but it is about making your writing clear, expressive, and powerful. Every sentence you write is a chance to explore how language works. When you’re in control of your sentence choices, it becomes less about memorising rules and more about expressing your voice.

Knowing when and how to start a new paragraph can make a big difference in how well your stories flow and how easy they are to read.
