Fresh Voices Tamariki 2026

We have just launched our first 2026 Write On Speak Out edition for the year, and it is full of gems!

Like this from Lauren, Year 8:
Hundreds of gemstones,
each one singular
glimmer from the shelves
an agate’s bands of colour spiral
time coiling
within the hue
collapsing inward
towards the centre
like a hypnotist’s eye
– a trance in stone?
or this from Andre, Year 6
I am a fiery lightning strike
waiting to release my feelings.
I wonder when I can go out to play.
Each of the young writers selected a piece to represent their portfolio of writing and recorded it so you can read and listen.
Our 2026 Fresh Voices project has broken down barriers to provide access to free Write On workshops and publication support to young people in Ōtautahi Christchurch and Rēkohu/Wharekauri Chatham Islands.
We are delighted to share these fresh voices with you. You will find an eclectic mix of writing selected by the tamariki who participated in this project. More writing from their portfolios can be found in Write On Magazine Issue 66.
Nga mihi nui to the schools that participated in this project and the champion teachers who supported their young writers.
Kia ora, Plains Media! We acknowledge your team for their incredible mahi in recording and broadcasting these fresh voices. Your kindness and expertise have empowered our young writers.
Thank you to the wonderful tutors Kate Preece, Heather McQuillan and Philomena Johnson, who inspired the writers to use their voices!
Ngā mihi nui to Rātā Foundation, COGs Chathams and Creative Communities Christchurch and Chathams for their funding support of this project.
If you are interested in being a part of future projects working with young writers in high-equity-needs schools in Canterbury, Kaikoura, Marlborough, and Nelson, then please be in touch as we plan towards our 2026-7 project.
