This summer rebel against the call of the beach, head to the shadows and huddle over a notebook or keyboard! With school out, it's time for teens to gather in Ōtautahi Christchurch to write!
Writing is actually only a part of Write On Summer Writing School for Teens. This is a chance for you to learn from the professionals, meet like-minds and form new friendships.
We are very excited to have attracted such amazing tutors for 2023. Look at this difficult choice for Day One and then head to our website to see the choices for all the other days, January 16-20 2023
a. Comedy: It's all laughs! with Ray Shipley
It will be all laughs from the get-go as we warm up with very short exercises designed to get us thinking about what makes something funny. We'll include some concepts like 'punching up', the power of very specific detail, rule of thirds, surprising metaphor, personal experience, and the juxtaposition of funny with feeling. Then you'll get time to work on a piece in whichever form you choose with a focus on digging into what's funny!
Ray Shipley is an Ōtautahi-based comedian, writer, and book-pusher. In 2019, they were nominated for the Billy T Award. Ray is a repeat Christchurch Poetry Slam winner, placing third nationally in 2018. Ray Shipley's Late Night Poetry Hour is a a regular showcase for poetry and comedy.
b. Poems don't just tumble from the sky with Joanna Preston
Join Joanna Preston for a writing workshop based on the exercises she used to write poems for her 2022 Ockham Award-winning collection, tumble. A chance to look behind the curtain and try your own hand at some of the exercises that made the poems happen.
Joanna Preston (she/her) is an Australian-born, dual citizen poet, editor and freelance writing tutor, who lives in a small rural town in Canterbury, New Zealand. Her second collection, tumble, won the Mary and Peter Biggs Award for Poetry at the 2022 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
