The Day Dolly Died

Sometimes the writing prompt in class is put aside for something more pressing and urgent.
Today, Eliza, aged 14, wrote a tribute to a big inspiration in her life.

On the day Dolly died
It felt like the brightest light on Earth
Had come to a sudden stop
On the day Dolly died
I rhinestoned my tears
And wore my pinkest outfit
On the day Dolly died
My friend and I hummed ‘Jolene’
While trying not to break down at school
On the day Dolly died
I felt a piece of my childhood
Slowly slip away
On the day Dolly died
Republicans and Democrats
Came together to mourn
On the day Dolly died
Social media flooded with tributes
And how she had impacted lives
On the day Dolly died
Imagination Library filled with donations
$9.25 after her iconic song
On the day Dolly died
It was filled with love and sadness
For the woman who was much more than ‘just a singer’
Dolly Parton 1946-2026
